The Pitch: Tampa, Florida caustic hardcore outfit Meatwound evoke 90's aggro attitude with their third album via Financial Ruin, Dead Tank, and Pax Aeternum. FFO: Helmet, Left Behind, Mantar
What I Like: My intro to Meatwound was 2017's Largo. And while I also compared that album to the boot-to-face metallic hardcore of Left Behind, Culero (Spanish for "asshole") seems to lean even further into the gritty 90's aesthetic of Helmet's Strap It On. Take the same alternative rock influences and old school hardcore ethos, top it off with some sludgy, extreme vocals (maybe even a little Fear Factory?) and you've got yourself a recipe for a knuckle dragging good time. And while these tracks definitely amp up the RPM's, my other most frequent reference point was Mantar. I couldn't shake the same vibes I got watching those two shirtless Germans tear up the stage back in 2016 when listening to groovy tracks like "Fist Of God" and "Final Archive." Goddam, the one-two punch of bass and drums on this thing gives me a raging you know what.
Critiques: No major curveballs or flashy instrumentation here, but that's not really what Culero is all about. What it lacks in these areas it more than makes up for in sheer brute force.
The Verdict:
Flight's Fav's: Void Center, Final Archive, Nightmare Farm
