The Pitch: "Aosoth is the second project of vocalist & lyricist MkM (the founder of Antaeus) evolving in the black/death metal genre. While Antaeus sets boundaries for violent, grinding black metal, Aosoth delivers more dissonant and 90's death metal elements" featuring members of The Order Of Apollyon, VI, INRVI, Hell Militia, and Temple of Baal
What I Like: V: The Inside Scriptures is 6 solid tracks of Deathspell Omega worship and interdimensional exploration. Dizzying, mind-bending blizzards of guitar swirl around a vortex of blastbeats, choral synths, and demonic howls. The atmosphere is suffocatingly dense, with nary an inch of the listening space free from sonic hellfire. And contrary to many releases that become tiresome in this approach, ultimately wearing the listener down, Aosoth manage to keep things textured and interesting. They pump the brakes just long enough to provide respite and also manage to infuse enough unique little flourishes to keep things from sounding overly uniform. Even when flooring the accelerator as with the demolishing opener "A Heart To Judge," the band deliver nearly 9 minutes of berating fury without ever becoming remotely boring. That's talent.
Critiques: The latter half isn't quite on par with the first, but it's not a drastic dip in quality.
The Verdict: Technical and consistently engaging, V: The Inside Scriptures is among the best black metal releases of 2017. It is an ever-escalating deluge of negative energy. It's been out for a little while now, so be sure to listen and purchase below.
