The Pitch: Connecticut metalcore band Currents follow up their solid EP I Let The Devil In with full length The Way It Ends again via SharpTone Records. FFO: Make Them SufferArchitectsUnderoath

What I Like: I had predicted that 2020 would be a strong year for metalcore coming off of a relative drought with only a few truly great releases few and far between. Over the past few months this has definitely proven to be the case with the new album from Currents just the latest in a serious deluge, dropping the same week as Make Them Suffer no less. The competition is steep for sure, but The Way It Ends holds its own with both aggressive djent portions on par with Architects' best material and melodic anthems every bit as catchy and heartfelt as those of Underoath. It's a powerful dichotomy of ripping, tearing harsh screams and sorrow-tinged singing that delivers the goods on both fronts. In particular, they really get me amped on the almost As I Lay Dying-esque riffs of the anthemic "A Flag To Wave" and the downtuned, bassy brutality of "Poverty of Self."

Critiques: As consistent as the album is, it could really use an injection of a few original ideas to help it stand out more from the pack. The quality is there across the board; I just wonder about the memorability factor.

The Verdict: Admittedly, The Way It Ends won't be the most original album you hear from metalcore in 2020, but it's another indication of the renewed relevance of the genre led by a new wave of fresh faced bands. Currents are ready to do battle and carry the flag for the genre like it's the early 00's all over again.
