The Pitch: "Lying in wait after laying siege to the underground with their highly acclaimed debut Ungodly Forms, Sentient Horror awakens once again to defile your unsuspecting perception of extremity. Echoing the forbearers of Scandinavian death metal elite, melody collides with brutality in a whirlwind of malice, putridity, and tenacity." FFO: Expulsion, Gruesome, Mammoth Grinder
What I Like: Sentient Horror is one of those bands that I don't spend a lot of time thinking about, but am always excited to see new material from. They're just that good time, graveyard romp kind of metal that's perfect anytime, anywhere. There's nothing to process, no technical gymnastics (save for some ripping solos); just balls-to-the-wall old school death metal. This is the Miller Lite or PBR of genre: you're not exactly exanding your flavor palette, but it gets the job done. I realize that some of these descriptions may not seem very flattering, but make no mistake, the world needs bands ready to throw down a simple D-beat, some raw vocals, and raging H2 distortion. In this respect, The Crypts Below knocks it out of the park.
Critiques: I think the light beer comments speak for themselves. Personally, I love a good $4 pitcher.
The Verdict: Prepare yourself for dive bar death metal. Turn off your brain, activate those primordial instincts, and just let loose. Sentient Horror are a band worth adding to your collection, originality be damned.
