The Pitch: Spain's brutal sci fi tech deathers Wormed go all Event Horizon on your ears with a new EP via Season Of Mist. "A nano technological war has been unleashed in the void to defeat the last sower of human life, Krighsu." FFO: Wormhole, Dying Fetus, Cryptopsy

What I Like: There are very few brutal technical death metal bands that I truly love, but Wormed continue to make the top of that short list. What generally turns me off about indecipherable gutterals just works for me in the hands of this particular band. It has something to do with the sheer density of their sound, and the impressively psychedelic riffs don't hurt either.  Every album is a suffocating cacophany of raging drums and contorted guitars, all held together with enough hooks and dynamics to keep things fresh and interesting where other tech death falls victim to stale uniformity. In this way, Metaportal is the perfect bridge between classic acts like Dying Fetus and more modern, atmospheric ones a la Portal and Altarage. All 4 of these tracks are highly concentrated and concise, delivering maximum impact but never at the sacrifice of complex, progressive song structuring. This is precisely what I mean when I encourage bands to "tighten things up." Not a single loose end to be found.

Critiques: This EP is about as airtight as an escape pod flled with Xenomorphs. The only thing that could step it up is throwing in some new tricks to pull up the innovation scale, but that's about it.

The Verdict: Another slam dunk from Wormed. While it's tragic that previous durmmer Guillermo Calero passed away at only 27 years old last year, I am glad to see this very talented band forge on. I have a feeling that we have only scratched the surface of their full potential and look forward to further Krighsu chronicles in the future. Stream early HERE
