The Pitch: Znoi is the debut album of post-black metal project Haze of Summer from Podolsk, Russia. It was record in summer 2016 with the participation of musicians from Arkona, Grace Disgraced, Logic Event, Golos Omeriki and Izmoroz.  FFO: Vattnet Viskar, Deafheaven

What I Like: For me, the most important aspect of Haze of Summer are the unique fusions that they bring to the table.  While the band still follows the basic formula of soaring power chords, focus on atmosphere and emotion, and raspy vocals; they also incorporate elements from other genres.  There are excellent moments of folk overtones ranging from classical acoustic guitar to accordian, the latter somehow fitting perfectly into the compositions.  Znoi also has some love-em-or-hate-em electronic moments that never quite steal the show, but are definitely prominent enough to catch your attention.  I'm interested to hear where the band takes this element in the future, so I count it as a pro overall even if it didn't necessarily drop my jaw.

Critiques: I'm not a kvlt elitist.  I'm fine with the pink album cover, the vaguely emo/hipster imagery, and the more melodic sound associated with this genre.  However, Znoi does commit some cardinal sins that tend to irk me about post-black and blackgaze.  Repetition is the most concerning.  "June" is a good example of a song that I just find boring.  Despite the unique electronic fusions, it's a track that just goes nowhere for me and has little to say.  I also find myself wishing that the vocals had a little more depth and presence.  I've heard plenty of post-black bands, especially from overseas, that have taken this atmospheric, melodic music and still pounded the listener hard with some truly commanding screams.

The Verdict: Znoi isn't an album that struck me as AOTY material, but it certainly stands out in a genre full of clones.  Leave it to the Russians to take a genre booming in the US and take it to a different place.  But don't take my word for it; in terms of albums that I have shared in groups and forums this year, Haze of Summer have had the most engagement and positive feedback by a long shot.  In other words, if you're a hardcore post-black fan you should definitely check this album out.  And if you want to complain about this genre spreading like wildfire, maybe you should examine why your fanbase isn't as enthusiastic in their support.  Stream and purchase below.
