The Pitch: Norwegian progressive and sludge metal from Timeworn and Fysisk Format.  FFO: Mastodon, Beneath The Storm, Howling Giant

What I Like:  Venomous High takes many of the hallmarks from Mastodon's heyday and makes them the band's own.  Songs like "All Chiefs" and "Ur Syntax" feature many guitar hooks that are reminiscent of Blood Mountain or Leviathan, although Timeworn also weave in post-metal riffs akin to Russian Circles or Cult of Luna on "Measure of Gold."  I am interested to hear more of such fusions.  The group maintains a gruff vocal delivery and plenty of hard rock sentiment beneath their sludgy, progressive sound; and also a few technical moments to boot.  Despite the softer beginnings, expect an abundance of crunchy tunes.  There is plenty of headbanging to be found (love that start-stop riff on the aptly named "The Infectious Gloom,") but also some ornate compositional work.

Critiques: This is another release that at times seems to be missing that "IT" factor.  My top picks below definitely have it in spades, boding well for the band's future.  However, certain stretches of this album, while never "bad," fail to hit the same depth of emersion for me.

The Verdict: A really solid album for those still grieving the early days of Mastodon; or those who simply enjoy sludgy, progressive music with killer riffs.  Timeworn have room for development, but they are definitely a contender for the future throne.

Flight's Fav's: The Infectious Gloom, Ur Syntax, Measure of Gold
