The Pitch: The third album from Australia’s King Parrot  via Housecore Records. "Ugly Produce reaches new heights in abrasive songwriting and serves up an odious pile of repulsive flavors you wouldn’t want to find on your local fruit and vegetable shelves,” issues vocalist Matt “Youngy” Young. “It’s a repugnant harvest of gnarled and nasty grind, death metal, thrash, and punk rock and it’s more caustic than ever.” FFO: Superjoint, Iron Reagan, Dead Cross

What I Like: Simply put, King Parrot is ugly music for ugly kids.  And if you weren't ugly going in, you will be coming out.  I was never much of a looker, but after listening to Ugly Produce I no resemble Steve Buscemi after a boxing match with Ali.  The signature element of this band is the vocals.  I've listened to plenty dissonant punk, hardcore, and grindcore bands over the years, but none of them have a vocalist quite as off-putting as Matthew Young.  The man sounds like he smoked an enitre pack of cigarettes before recording each track.  His wheezing shrieks are certainly an acquired taste, but they are instantly recognizable.  His repulsive sound aside, expect energetic, if not pretty standard, punky drums and guitar with more extreme elements leaking through not unlike the new Dead Cross album.

Critiques: While these guys have grown on me, I'm still not overly impressed by their music.  Again like Dead Cross, if you take away the unique vocal performance you're left with some fun-but-unremarkable punk and thrash riffs.  None of this to say that the band isn't talented; I just don't think they have reached their prime.

The Verdict: Ugly Produce: heavy, ugly music perfect for a sweaty club performance.  I'm not overly impressed with these guys on record, but I have a feeling that they can tear it up live.  Check it out Friday.
