The Pitch: Grimy old school blackened death metal from Australia's Descent via Redefining Darkness Records. FFO: Earth Rot, Expulsion, Crypt Rot

What I Like: Another work of utter vitriol, vomited forth from the world of HM2 obsessed death metal. Led by blackened tremolos and savage, sadistic snarls, Descent barrel forth with guns fully blazing as the genre demands. It's an ugly and bitter display of all manner of extremity boiled down to its simplest, but most effective, form. This fermenting stew has all of my favorite ingredients: death metal distortion, black metal atmosphere, gutter punk drums, and just an overall understanding that the darker corners of metal are equally despicable and depraved. And speaking of the drums, there some truly excellent fills sprinkled heavily about the D-beats. I’m especially keen on the one that kicks off “Confined,” as well as the pure testosterone injection bass and drum break about midway through “Pedestal pf Scum.”

Critiques: Nothing new or particularly ear-catching. Just another good time in the world of OSDM.

The Verdict: Towers of Grandiosity connected from the very beginning, and with each listen my enjoyment only grows more and more. It’s not going to wow you with any bells and whistles, but the core mission statement of mayhem and destruction is enough to carry Descent well beyond the finish line.
