The Pitch: Malicious black metal a la Deathspell Omega and Imperial Tirumphant from our Seattle neighbors, Voidthrone.
What I Like: Great choice of band name. I listen to this and picture a cross between Kali and Baphomet with a black hole for a face. This imposing, nightmarish figure sits, unwaivering, on a twisted black throne...and all we can do is stare, paralyzed with terror, into the emptiness of its gaze. Between the contorted, maleficent guitar sound and utterly despicable vocals, all I could really do is listen in a numbed stupor. I feel as if I can hear the individual muscles contracting with every vile shriek. And the drums definitely add some extra weight behind each blow.
What I Don't Like: It's not as technically proficient or compositionally interesting as their French peers, but this is otherwise a successfully engaging outing.
The Verdict: You will behold its gaze, and you will be unable to break the hypnosis.
