The Pitch: Former member of one of my favorite now-defunct underground sludge groups, Alaskan, begins anew with They Grieve.  "The personal lamentation of a figure in anguish. The singular narrative resonates with the long-form composition — both elements coming together to produce an eclipsing phenomenology of grief."

What I Like:  This album shares many of the elements I loved about Alaskan: the crushing waves of distortion, the simplistic earworm hooks, the tortured howls that could only come from an old mariner with an albatross strung around his neck; but there are also subtle differences.  The increased use of ambience and even slower pacing conjure parallels with UK's Sonance perhaps more so than the The End.  Somehow the music feels even darker than before; perhaps in part due to the increased space given to the bleak instrumentation.  Previously I had compared the music to an introspective journey.  This feels more like sinking into quicksand.

What I Don't Like: A surprise here and there wouldn't hurt, but I'm pretty content with this sound and don't want to mess it up with too many frills either.

The Verdict: Glad to see Gary back in action with other talented musicians that seem to share a very specific vision.  Much like with any trajedy in life, we grieve and then we move on.  Time to move on.
