The Pitch: Québec black metal band Délétère deliver their latest blasphemous EP, tackling the tale of Babel. FFO: Cult Of Fire, Mgla, Death Karma
What I Like: Theovorator : Babelis Testamentum is three stunningly atmospheric and powerfully emotive track spanning a very engaging 20+ minute duration. If you're a fan of groups like Cult of Fire and Mgla (and you should be), you'll know exactly what to expect from this one. From the opening organ intro, it becomes clear that this is no mere smattering of 2nd wave tremolos and blastbeats. Délétère bring with them a different kind of darkness entirely; one that is shrouded in mournful melodies that surround your heart and squeeze. The music is a dense fog of misery and regret that seems to revel in its desolation. And yet somehow I can't avoid the word "beautiful" when considering the overall effect. This is the definition of embracing your sorrow.
Critiques: I'd like to see these guys step a little more from the shadows of their peers. As good as these tracks are, they are completely interchangeable with my favorites from Cult Of Fire.
The Verdict: Absolutely gorgeous. It's been a little slow year for black metal so far, but this EP makes a big statement. In just 3 songs, Délétère may have just crafted one of the best BM releases of 2019. Definitely give it a listen and buy it if you can.
