The Pitch: Haunting Chicago industrial project 5RVLN5 (pronounced “Surveillance”) conjure nightmares with The Black Mark. FFO: Skinny Puppy, Godflesh, Author & Punisher
What I Like: The old school Puppy vibes are strong with this one. Bleak, visceral tracks like "World of Filth" are crawling with allusions to the likes of VIVIsectVI and Too Dark Park. The vibes are generally harsh and depraved with soundscapes that feel blunt, cold, and made of concrete. There's even a seedy pornographic element that comes to a head with the uncomfortable samples of "The Coward And The Whore." But 5RVLN5 also have a melodic side as heard on the hauntingly morose "Flesh," which sounds more like something off of Author & Punisher's Melk En Honig.
Critiques: I would have liked one more proper track maybe instead of the more interlude-y "The Coward and the Whore."
The Verdict: The Black Mark is a very concise, 22 minute brick to the face that oozes with the underbelly of Chicago. A must listen for industrial fans.
