The Pitch: Polish black metal band, Medico Pest are back with their insidious new album ב :The Black Bile via Season Of Mist.  FFO OutreSchammasch, Mgla

What I Like: Much like with the previous EP, Herzogian Darkness, Medico Peste have once again roped me in with a seriously enticing opening track. With its progressive structure and chilling atmosphere, watching the video for "God Knows Why" was more than enough to warrant adding The Black Bile to my anticipated albums list. This song is a eerie labyrinth equal parts Ulcerate and Deathspell Omega. And as is the case with much of the rest of the album, it is a dynamic work of ups and downs, from the harsh and catchy opening to the psychedelic bass riff that opens up the Tool-esque bridge. And the good times continue with "All Too Human," and its very deliberate, infectious drumming, 90's alternative-tinged guitars, and as always, shiver-inducing raw black metal vocals.

Critiques: Unfortunately the second half of the album is a bit too on the sluggish side for me. It may appeal to bigger fans of blackened doom metal than I, but personally I was a little bored. I do enjoy the jazzy bass and beats on "Skin" though.

The Verdict: Once again, there are some really great ideas being presented with ב :The Black Bile. I just wish that it added up to a complete product with a bit more consistency. Even so, I remain convinced that Medico Peste are poised to become one of the most interesting black metal projects of the new era, right up there with Imperial Triumphant, etc.
