The Pitch: With some changes in members, Wisconsin death metal band Casket Robbery's new EP is no less worthy of the horns.  FFO: Dethklok, Abnormality, Deildriver

What I Like:  A creepy music box and distant cries of an infant abruptly transition to a volcanic eruption of "POCKETS LINED WITH FLOWERS!!!" followed by the first highly infectious groove.  These first 30 seconds tell us all we need to know about Casket Robbery.  One might notice the change in vocals since Evolution of Evil, and I must say that I think it's a good or at least equivalent shift.  The band has moved from Dustin's more Dethklok-y growls to Megan's channeling of Mallika Sundaramurthy and Angela Gossow.  When joined with the familiar, catchy death metal hooks, The Ascension becomes a rock solid EP with all 3 songs capturing my mind and spirit in horror imagery.  Each track was an instant favorite right from the first listen, and led me to hit the repeat button a number of times.

Critiques: All said and done, it's all pretty typical death metal.  Fortunately this band knows how to take these familiar elements and make them really shine.

The Verdict: It can be hard to survive major lineup changes so early in a band's career, but Casket Robbery perservere with aplomb on The Ascension.  Much like Devildriver and Lamb of God, this band has a sound that is intensely heavy while also having a certain mainstream appeal.  I see them going far with the right support and direction.  Get it today.
