Thank You Sir. May I Have Another?

When we're kids, we do stupid stuff.  Certain poor decisions seem to just call to us.  I personally had an affinity for sticking paperclips into wall sockets (disclaimer: this incredibly stupid activity can result in serious injury or death.  I do not take responsibility for anyone who tries it.).  From the beginning, I knew it was a bad idea...and yet I was compelled by a morbid fascination.  And you'd think one shock like that would be enough, but no.  Such are my feelings about French crust metal band Nuisible.  Even though I know the music is ugly, grimy, and probably rotting my brain; I always come back for seconds.

The band's album, Inter Feces et Urinam Nascimur ("We Are Born In Urine and Feces") is a primitive, barbaric force driven mostly by moist flesh, body odor, and flailing limbs.  The ever-present, cataclismic bass tone and mutated power chords are simply crushing.  But Nuisibleare more than just big, dumb shocks to the system.  To counter the simple nature of the deathy vocals, they are capable of creating some lightning hooks as evidenced on the opening of "Forest Fire."

Blackened tremolos are featured just as much as bulldozers of distortion.  But even when things are kept more firmly to the punk rock roots, the results are equally fantastic.  Case in point, you have to love the D-beat driven madness of "Out Come The Wolves."  Those first few minutes are an act of abuse on the senses, with the vocals degrading into an indecipherable bit of caveman speak.  It's as if this music causes some sort of de-evolution.

So whether channeling a bit of At The Gates or simply putting fist to face with the likes of Toxic Narcotic, Nuisible are a depraved joy that I am more than happy to continue sticking the paperclip into.  They even manage to transcend their bounds and earn the right to words like "haunting" with possibly their biggest triumph, "Roar Of The Great Torrent."  Will I always come back unharmed?  I'm not sure...and I'm not sure that I care.  Thank you sir.  May I have another?
