The Pitch: Out of Dallas and sporting a truly bad attitude, this is the crossover thrash of Power Trip. FFO Exodus, Iron Reagan, Cro-Mags.
What I Like: Unless I'm just not in the loop, I feel like crossover is a genre we don't hear a lot from these days. Regardless, it has been a pleasure to get two such releases within the first quarter of 2017. But forget the fun and satirical humor that was a a big part of Crossover Ministry. Nightmare Logic is a much more joyless affair; devoid of any laughter to offset the grim lyrical content. It features a heaviness and bloodthirst perhaps more on par with Black Breath or Kreator than D.R.I. Subjects are highly morbid, and the compositions and production have a certain early 90's ethos of bleak outlook and rebellion. Yet despite all of this, the band manages to create songs that can be highly catchy ("Executioner's Tax") and ripe for moshing. Great galloping hooks, a few killer solos, and those pounding, tension-building drums ("Waiting Around to Die") truly are to die for.
What I Don't Like: My only real critique of this album is that there are a few too many drawn-out intros. Almost every song has one, and by rough estimate they take up 6 minutes or more of the album. They can be pretty potent setups to the explosive pace changes, but they also lose impact when they happen over and over again.
The Verdict: Another great album for when you're just feeling pissed off. The soundtrack to grey skies, narrowed brow, and gritted teeth. Try not to hurt anyone, but I think they'll see you coming.
