Au-Dessus is a black metal band from Lithuania. There’s actually a lot of post-black in this album; from the progressive, melodious atmosphere to the cascading guitar chords. Yet Au-Dessus is far from another Drudkh clone. For every passage of post-metal magic, expect a ferocious counterpoint. I like how songs will start off with a really dark tone and then evolve into something more melodic over time, or sometimes vice-versa. Take “II” or “V” for example, the latter transforming into a vicious cut worthy of Consolamentum. In fact, each track seems to up the ante from the previous one.
The overall sound is very deep and heavy, the vocals alternatively high and harsh. This dichotomy helps to create a strong dynamic and range. Expect plenty of crunchy bass guitar in the mix to further fill out the aesthetic. Production is pretty clean but retains some edge through the raw, treble-heavy distortion and organic drumming.
As I mentioned, there is a strong progressive element even if compositions are fairly simplistic in nature. Still, there is enough variance within each track to carry the song lengths with aplomb. Guitar work is solid with the occasional hooky riff to break up the rapidly strummed chords. Au-Dessus are by no means too kvlt to employ some delay, chorus modulation, and other effects to create multi-layered textures.
Overall, this is an impressive debut. By the time it was over, I went straight into spin #2 and was getting out my credit card. At only $4.95 on bandcamp, it would be foolish to pass this up. It’s emotionally engaging, well-written, and proves that post-black doesn’t have to put you to sleep. I will be coming back to this one for a few listens to be sure, but I see no reason not to throw them a few bucks.
