The Pitch: Sadomasochistic, industrialized deathcore passion project from California's Kinkshamer.

What I Like: There's definitely something here worth exploring. Not since the very NSFW music video for NIN's "Sin" have I seen a band so deeply and purely explore the topics of sexual taboo. Don't get me wrong, there are plenty of other groups that cover these topics ranging from the industrial to porngrind genres, but Kinkshamer fully embrace the theme as their mission statement. Exhibitionism, gerontophelia, edging; nothing seems to be off limits lyrically on this 5 song EP. Highly provocative imagery is delivered via djenty, detuned deathcore riffs, industrialized death growls, samples (often pornographic in nature), and even some tasteful synth elements.

Critiques: Musically, we're not quite there yet. Of the songs featured here, I think that "A Most Vulagr Display" does the best job of delivering both the sadomasochistic atmosphere and interesting composition in the same package. Otherwise, some of the performances come off as a bit generic and often inconsistent.

The Verdict: Criticism aside, there's something worth cultivating in Kinkshamer. The discomfort factor is definitely there, which is impressive in an age where metal just isn't as dangerous as it used to be. Where are the artists that leave the WASPs clutching their pearls and demanding that we "think of the children?" If that interests you, give Societal Sects a listen.
