Background/The Band

In recent memory, it appears as though the black metal underground movement has taken its form across the continent of Europe. And now, one such act based out of Kiev, Ukraine are making their mark with the physical release of their debut full-length. Ungoliantha are a symphonic brand of the blackened variety, and they are an outfit that's been active for many years now. Named after a reference to the spider-beast "Ungoliant" in Tolkien's novel 'The Silmarillion', the band was involved in several live shows and released a demo a little over a decade ago. But now, the independent black metal band are presenting their first album to the masses on LP. Is it worth the wait?

Album Breakdown

Ungoliantha's debut full-length titled Through The Chaos, Through Time, Through The Death is a 45-minute release consisting of nine tracks, with a bonus cover added in. The album's concept revolves around biblical references to things such as Armageddon, The Four Horsemen and other related events. Within the music itself, listeners will find a plethora of diverse instrumentals, coupled with a dreary atmosphere and powerful high vocals that are associated with the genre. Some parts are slower and softer during transitions, which makes the heavy and fast parts all the more enjoyable.

The Pros

This album has tons of goodies. For one thing, the production work on the guitars and melodic instrumental sections is phenomenal. The tone is crisp, yet distorted, making them a fine addition. There are a few diferent riffs throughout that complement the music. The melodic aspect, structuring and ambiance are arguably the definitive features of the release. A lot of energy was put into this album, and the slow parts have emotion in them as well. The album isn't too long for black metal, but the modest length is justified by the memorable music and themes scattered throughout. Even the bass sounds nice a lot of the time, and the other instruments thrown in at times give off a fresh feeling. The vocals are aggressive and hard-hitting as ever.

The Cons

Overall, the album only has a small number of faults. For one thing, the production quality on some aspects, such as the high vocals and certain drumming patterns, could've been a bit better. Secondly, some of the songs drag on a little too much, and a few transitions feel kind of out of place at times.

The Verdict

In conclusion, this album by Ungoliantha is definitely not without its merits. The release is a worthy listen to any and all fanatics of old school or modern black metal for a few reasons. Be it the symphonic and melodic influences, dark elements and imagery, great lyricism and interesting themes, memorable instrumentals and more. Through The Chaos, Through Time, Through The Death throws a lot of different stuff your way...and a lot of it sticks well...making it an album worth buying and one definitely worth listening to at least once.
