Background

Soul Dissolution is a Belgian extreme metal band that has broken boundaries and branched out their sound through a mixture of a few distinct musical elements. The two man project is fairly notable for its amalgamation of black metal shrieks and tremolo riff patterns with post-metal atmosphere and vibes akin to acts such as Harakiri For The Sky. And, since roughly 2012, Soul Dissolution has released, thus far, two full length albums, with this one here being their sophomore release.

Album Breakdown

The second and latest full length courtesy of Soul Dissolution, titled Stardust, is a heavily space-themed as well as depressive, yet ambient record to listen to from start to finish. Having been released via Black Lion Records in late March of this year, Stardust is a six track, 38 minute long album that serves as a reminder of the awesomely heavy and eclectic nature of the underground music scene in some respects. Let's find out how it makes a name for itself.

The Pros

The album's introductory composition is a rather chilling, yet soothing one at that...with its melodic strings and epic outro leading up to some blackened destruction that catches listeners seemingly by surprise. Then, the tone goes into a darker one accompanied by death and black metal shredding with background acoustics and ambiance that balances out the rest of the chaos. A lot of the progression found in Stardust is intruiging due to its creative transitions and the different types of instrumentals that make up the album's sound. The vocals serve as another instrument, with its high-pitched shrieks and overall dissonance. There is a minute or so long intermission track later on that is comprised of possibly a piano or synth, which adds a nice break from the rest. In general, if you're an enthusiast of eclectic instruments in heavy metal and/or black metal with a slight twist to it, then this is the album for you.

The Cons

Despite what I've mentioned previously about the energy and enthusiasm of the vocals on Stardust, I do wish that there was a little bit more to them in the sense of lyrics or variety. In addition, the album could use some more in the way of memorable guitar solos such as the ones at the end of "The Last Farewell" and such.

The Verdict

Stardust is an exceptionally solid blackened metal release from the Belgian heavy metallers at Soul Dissolution. The release is just the right length and has some pretty solid content in terms of its diverse instrumentals, energetic vocals, and conflicting atmosphere. I'd recommend this as a listen to fans of more modern black metal and we at Metal Trenches will see to it that we keep in touch with the band as far as future releases go.
