Slammy and with a lot of brutality that you've heard before...but still well executed nonetheless

Background

Depraved Murder is a brutal Indonesian trio that strive to put out some heavy and crushing tracks filled with slam riffs, fast drumming and typically guttural/toilet vocals. Since their inception about half a decade or so ago, the brutal death metallers thus far put out two full-length albums under a couple different labels. And now, they're back at it again with Manifestation: their latest effort.

Album Breakdown

No breakdowns here, just slams. But, as far as Manifestation goes, it serves as the band's sophomore full-length release that is out now under the Comatose Music label. This new 29 minute offering is spliced into nine songs, nine sacrifices if you will. Not much more to say about it here so let's just get to the main focus at hand.

Analysis

As mentioned before, this is a brutal death album with a lot of slams/chromatic riffs, but maybe not in the way you might think. More so, the slam riffs on Manifestation are played out closer to the style of Pathology than say stuff like Epicardiectomy. No slow downs or groovier sections, the slammy sections are more of a bridge between riffs, played in a palm muted and fast style. The production quality is about as brutal death metal-esque as it gets also, with the drums sounding somewhat low-end at times (especially the snare) and the guttural vocals reminding me of similar artists such as Disgorge or Condemned.

Getting to the songs, the opening gets right down to business with no time to waste as listeners are assaulted with the same fast riffs and toilet vocals they will be hearing for the next 29 minutes. The track lengths are all around three minutes, a modest duration and fitting for the genre. 'Congenital Anomalies Chromosome' is the shortest track but still one of my faves for its Abominable Putridity style riffs and pacing. 'Excruciate Impulsion' is another banger for its more complex tremolo riffage and different transitions; as are a few of the later tracks for similar reasons. I didn't care for the closing song...and the rest of it is decent but a lot of the times it gets repetitive or blends in.

The Verdict

A ton of the content on Manifestation is undoubtedly fast, heavy and brutal. The slams and other riffs are on-point and consistent, as are the drums and vocals for the most part. But, nothing about it really surprised me and I got exactly what I expected from the start. It's got mostly everything you've heard before if you've been keeping up with this style of music and I wish there could've been some nuances I could pick out. As it stands, though, the music is well executed for the genre and I would gladly listen to it again in the near future. It's middle of the road, but still a very decent middle nonetheless.
