Background

The Texas death metal/core scene is one that's been home to several heavy (if a bit obscure) hitters in recent years...ranging from the likes of I AM in Dallas to slam band Devour The Unborn in El Paso. However, the focus for today is on a little death metal/hardcore project by the name of Creeping Death. Though their ties or significance to Metallica remain unclear, this aptly titled five-piece outfit out of Denton, Texas is one that's pulled out all the stops since their inception in 2015. And now, following the release of some demos and singles, their second EP was unveiled on the forefront early in 2018, with plans to follow up to it with their debut full length. But, for now, let's just focus on this one.

Album Breakdown

Specter of War is the artists' sophomore EP released in early 2018 under the Killing a Sound Records label. This release boasts five tracks comprised of around eighteen minutes of speedy thrash and hardcore riffing, death metal-inspired growling vocals, single and double bass drumming and more. It's worth noting also that this EP was initially released last year digitally, but was now re-released on the massive eOne/EntertainmentOne records label, where it is available physically on LP format.

Analysis

As stated before, Specter of War is the culmination and byproduct of a few elements taken in from a few different genres. A couple of tracks lean more on the thrashy-oldschool style; similarly while others take on the modern hardcore feel with a death metal backdrop, overtones, or vocals. This one's got some abundant and lightning paced riffs that mix in with double bass and blast beat drumming throughout. There are times where I wished the bass was a bit more audible, but I digress.

The opening song 'Revenge' is possibly my personal fave for its nostalgic vibes, simple yet effective verse-chorus song structure, and its guitar solos towards the outro. Another decent thing about this EP is the nice addition of guitar solo parts that have substance, especially in the previously mentioned song as well as 'Trail of Confusion'. And, while 'Revenge' is more of a traditional thrash-hardcore song, the self-titled track is full on hardcore with some death metal feels, which brings it up to being my second fave. The chromatic riff in the second half is especially memorable and energetic for any death metal fan to listen to. 'Salvation' follows closely behind with its open note shredding and tremolos that lead into breakdowns. Likewise, 'Trail of Confusion' has a pretty cool riff that starts it off. 'New Agony', however, was more of a forgettable track in my opinion aside from a couple of cool drum patterns and the guitar solo halfway in.

The Verdict

Creeping Death's second EP is ultimately a fairly decent one that has elements of both oldschool and modern heavy metal. The variety really helps in creating a refreshing, if at times all too familiar, sound that is sure to pique the interest of many a core enthusiast or death metal listener. A good and swift listen that leaves you somewhat satisfied.
