Background

The deathgrind genre is always great for heaviness and such, as the substance is consistently chaotic and brutal as ever. Carnifliate is one subtle, yet somewhat effective example of this formula. The riffs are fast and brutal death-inspired, the vocals all over the place, blast beats on point and an 80s horror undertone present throughout, there is no wonder these Slovenian slayers are at the top of their game. And now, they're following up to their debut from a couple years ago with their sophomore full-length release: Disgusting Festivities; a swift six song offering that's more straight-up brutal and fast than innovative or experimental. But let's see what it has to offer us in terms of those grimy, gory, violent qualities.

Analysis

The album itself is a rather short one, with less than 20 minutes of content overall. However, there's always something going on and the dissonance in the chaotic grind is always relentless. Some sections consist of slammy chromatic riffs while others have some borderline thrashy or OSDM material or even some deathcore-esque breakdowns such as in the outro of the first track. The vocals really stand out here because of how much they do in terms of variety. You've got your high shrieks akin to a lot of grindcore, your oldschool low growls or gutturals, and even some pig squeals that feel reminiscient of MySpace era deathcore or stuff like Circle of Dead Children or even Misery Index as times. The opening track 'First Class Cunt' really gives off older deathcore vibes in the latter half and the rest, as well as a few of the other songs, sounds a bit like Exhumed but with slightly more slam-oriented vibes in the riffs and vocals. 'Compel Insemination' is another track I could recommend for its double bass blasting madness in the first half and droning outro topped off with a pig squeal. When the slamming breakdowns come in they're kinda epic and memorable, too. It's got some high points here and there, but overall Disgusting Festivities ain't anything too novel or surprising on any level. The formula is pretty clear throughout and the sound is consistent, though I wished there were more memorable instrumental sections or maybe some more guitar solo action as well. As is, this one is pretty decent though.

Verdict

Carnifliate's second album demonstrates some really great ambition in terms of just being over-the-top and not giving a damn. There's some level of technical prowess here and there, but the main focus is just fast and dumb fun. It's decently paced and won't take up too much of your time. And, though it doesn't have much else to offer, there's still enough in here to assault your senses for a short time. Still, check it out if you're a fan of grind at all or the more chaotic side of brutal death metal. Might be up your alley.
