The Pitch: Vancouver, British Columbia-based death metal faction Auroch continue to grow and mature with seven more slices of technical extreme metal madness in the vein of Imperial Triumphant, Mitochondrion, and Ulcerate.
What I Like: Mad music student skills on display here. These guys are dedicated to their craft. I'd have to dedicate my life to my guitar to play even close to this speed and insanity. And in addition to the impressiveness of the instrumentation, the songs themselves end up being both vicious and enjoyable. The opening to the album is just plain creepy.
What I Don't Like: Occasionally things get so technical that I get lost. At this point I get a little pulled out of it, but it's a pretty minor complaint and mostly due to my own inferior temporal lobe. Brutal-style vocals could be a little stronger.
The Verdict: Auroch continue to impress me with their continued destruction of everything simple and standard. Mute Books represents the band hitting yet another new level of expertise.
