The Pitch: South Wales blackened sludge trio Tides Of Sulfur follow up the excellent Extinction Curse with a new EP via The Sludgelord. FFO: Vermin Womb, Northless, Lord Mantis

What I Like: Blackened sludge may form the foundation of Tides Of Sulfur's sound, but there's more to it than that. Tracks like "Worms" come with blistering crust beats and hardcore fury. The harsh vocals are masked in a veil of distortion, amplifying the already ugly delivery. Throughout this EP, pacing oscillates between these raging visceral assaults and swampy, groovey slogs a la Lord Mantis as with "DLMM."

Critiques: Tides Of Sulfur's strength is in their variety, and I don't think that these 24 minutes fully showcase the same capabilities displayed on Extiction Curse. Furthermore, the material doesn't really stick with me.

The Verdict: Paralysis of Reason is a perfectly acceptable entry in the genre. It's fun to listen to and packs a punch, but ultimately doesn't reach the same heights as their previous LP or make any major lasting waves. Definitely worth a listen, but moreso I recommend backtracking to their full length.
