The Pitch: UK technical deathcore crew Viscera blow out the competetion from square one with their Unique Leader debut Obsidian. FFO: Within The Ruins, Sylosis, Born Of Osiris
What I Like: Within The Ruins better watch themselves, cuz Viscera are here to give them a serious run for their money. Up until this point, I was convinced that Joe Cocchi's djenty rapid-fire of technical melodies were such a product of his individual soul that no other guitarist would ever sound the same. Enter Ross ‘Lenny’ McLennan and Adam Bell: brothers seemingly seperated from Cocchi at birth. Their relentless grooves, chugs, and sweeps are the absolute driving force of Obsidian, making every single track a potential single. And hooks aside, there is plenty of other talent on display from the Born of Osiris-y synth work to the varied delivery of ex-Sylosis vocalist Jamie Graham. Shrieks, gutterals, clean singing: you name it, he's got it. There's even a choral part on "Carpe Noctem" that gave me Fleshgod Apocalypse vibes. This is the complete package condensed down into a lean, near-perfect 36 minutes.
Critiques: The WTR similarities are so close at times that Viscera run the risk of being called biters. Personally, I think there is plenty of room in the genre for this approach, but it would be wise regardless to find ways to further distance themselves.
The Verdict: An utter deathcore delight. From the pacing and production to the jaw-dropping performances, Obsidian deserves the same recognition that the likes of Shadows Of Intent and Infant Annihilator recieved last year.
