The Pitch: Raw and wretched brutal death metal EP from Belarus-based band Relics of Humanity via Willowtip Records. FFO: Cryptopsy, Dying Fetus, Vulvodynia

What I Like: Nothing to see here, folks. Just 17 minutes of sheer brutality. Gargled growls, blastbeats, and Florida-scene riffs stamp out any shred of modernity in a clear campaign to make death metal great again. I'm being somewhat facetious, of course, but that doesn't stop Obscuration from being the no-frills blast from the past that it is. This album could have easily been found collecting dust in some forgotten corner of Morrisound Recording. Obscuration, above all else, worship the likes of Morbid Angel, Cynic, Deicide, and Obituary. Goddam, that snare tone is righteous as hell.

Critiques: It goes without saying that the style of this album is both a strength and a weakness...it just depends on your current mood. If you came looking for the freshest, most contortionist death metal in the game, you'll probably be disappointed. But if you're simply a glutton for purist brutal punishment, look no further.

The Verdict: The short version of this review is simply, "it's brutal death metal." That's all you really need to know. Obscuration is for the reader out there who has listened to their early 90's collection a few too many times but still can't get enough of that classic sound. Look for Relics of Humanity this Friday.
