The Pitch: Groovy brutal death metal with an eclectic approach from Bahrain's Lunacyst. FFO: Cannibal Corpse, The Hudson Horror, Abnormality

What I Like: I was initially ready to write Lunacyst off as just another dime a dozen brutal death metal band, but over time it became clear that there is more here than initially meets the eye. While they certainly utilize many of the same tropes that have been done to death by bands like Cannibal Corpse, what struck me the most in the end is the sheer eclecticism of riffs. From song to song, you'll hear shifts from both within and beyond various death metal subgenres. "Sacrilege," for instance, has a very jazzy intro and toys with plenty of later career, proggy Death. Meanwhile, other songs toy with everything from groove and tech death to melodeath and metalcore in their approach. This level of variety makes the album a much more interesting and engaging experience while still keeping things grounded in the brutality of the vocals.

Critiques: The songwriting and production could still use some tightening up to take things to the next level, but at 38 minutes it never overstays its welcome.

The Verdict: Lunacyst surprised me with this self-titled album. Once more, our oft-forgotten Indian brethren remind me that the metal legion is going strong in all corners of the globe. Definitely give the album a listen and show them support if you dig it.
