The Pitch: Progressive mathcore/post-hardcore band Satyr continue to charm the underground with their new album Locus. FFO: Protest The Hero, The Fall Of Troy, Novallo

What I Like: For someone like myself who has serious memories associated with listening to the likes of "F.C.P.R.E.M.I.X.," Locus is an absolute joy. It's one of those albums that immediately turned into 3 consecutive listens the very first time I put it on. Satyr have tapped into the same vein that spawned so much great techy post-hardcore and math rock in the mid 2000's to the point where I simply must sit down with a chat with these guys. It seems impossible that we don't share a deep nostalgia for everything from Protest The Hero to The Mars Volta. From the drums to the guitars, all of the performances are highly impressive, but also nicely grounded by an attention to songwriting that makes each track endlessly engaging. As a result, nothing ever feels showy or masturbatory. Quite to the contrary, their persona is (wisely either by design or not) of a band that does not at all take themselves seriously despite their obvious technical prowess.

Critiques: I think that there's a little room to find that X factor that makes Satyr really stand out from their peers. I feel like that's the one element left to tackle. They are amazing players and songwriters, but they also run the risk of just being another band from the genre.

The Verdict: Locus is an album so catchy that it's downright danceable at times. If you enjoy any of the bands I've name-dropped along the way or just enjoy math rock, mathcore, or post-hardcore; get the f#$k in here now. Satyr are seriously onto something.
