The Pitch: New York/New Jersey veterans Zombie Apocalypse drop this eclectic bit of hardcore fury via Innerstrength Records. FFO: Shai Hulud, Earth Crisis, Strongarm
What I Like: Zombie Apocalypse first caught my attention with the album title, Life Without Pain Is A Fucking Fantasy, which is a philosophy that I try to live by. People spend too much time mourning their lot in life and forget that the struggles are precisely what make us grow and mature into better, stronger people. Those without struggle end up soft and detached. Just look at the Kardashians. Anyways, this album captures that sentiment quite well musically. Combining hard-hitting classic hardcore with melancholic melodies, Zombie Apocalypse preach self motivation very much like a modern day incarnation of Shai Hulud. I'm especially fond of catchy, hook-heavy tracks like "Brave Digger" and "Fearface." The upbeat guitars, D-beat, and no nonsense gang vocals pack an entire group therapy session into a minute or less. Edit: I'm a total noob and didn't realize that Matt Fox (formerly of Shai Hulud) is IN this band 0_0
Critiques: Nothing really specific to report here. Other than not being Earth-shattering, this is tight little release with plenty to enjoy.
The Verdict: It's been some time since I heard a band in this style. Not since high school listening to the likes of Hearts Once Nourished... and That Within Blood Ill-Tempered, really. Zombie Apocalypse make me realize just how much I missed it, and I hope they'll do the same for you.
