The Pitch: The Columbian blackened thrash duo of ruthless shredder David HellRazor and vicious frontwoman Alejandra Blasfemia join forces once more for the latest Lucifera album via Dunkelheit Produktionen. FFO: Rebel Wizard, Holocausto, Destroyer 666
What I Like: My mother-in-law grew up in Cali, so I'd be interested to see her reaction to this. Perhaps unsurprisingly, Colombia is not somewhere I get a lot of album requests from. While this makes basis of comparison difficult, I wouldn't be surprised to hear that this is one of the best and brightest acts from the region. Alejandra is a force to be reckoned with. Her maniacal blackened snarls are every bit as imposing as any of her contemporaries; male or female alike. Likewise, David is an absolute madman on the axe, expecially with rippers like "Sigillum Diaboli" and "Brujera." He pulls on everything that was great about classic 80's thrash metal while keeping the dark, blackened aesthetic strong. Rounded out by endorphin-churning D-beats and appropriately raw production, La Caceria De Brujas ("The Hunt for Witches") is an album that should make Cronos himself grin with pleasure. Love the subtle inclusion of church bell on "Arde En Llamas" as well.
Critiques: Especially for a more throwback sound, this album is surprisingly pretty airtight. My only gripe is that the comparitively slower, lengthier tracks "Ceremonia Secular" and "Evocación Del Caos" tend to kill my forward momentum. I could honestly do without them altogether.
The Verdict: Lucifera have kicked off 2019 with a very strong entry for the genre. I appreciate that blackened thrash is still a bit of a niche with only a few big releases each year, and La Caceria De Brujas is very deserving of one of those coveted spots.
