The Pitch: The debut album from international, highly avant-garde black metal group Adaestuo via WTC Productions. FFO: Titaan, Heilung, Spektr
What I Like: Krew Za Krew ("blood for blood") is a highly experimental, atmospheric album that is sure to challenge the casual listener. Every track offers something a little different, from the traditional regional approach of the opener to the Bioshock-esque strings and eerie ambience of "Transcendental." It's not until the third track, "Monument," that we get our first taste of "proper" black metal. Appropriate to its title, this towering track is over 10 minutes of booming, echoing drums and chilling wails from Hekte Zaren. She's like a much angrier, darker version of Myrkur with a little Heilung for good measure. But honestly, I am much more impressed by the less straightforward material. I adore the droning piano, strings, and noise of the absolutely harrowing "Subterranean Fire." The whispered snarls seem to come from all directions within its dark, endless void. And there is something timeless and entrancing about the deeply meditative title track. I feel like I'm falling through time.
Critiques: Less a criticism than a recommendation: this album is perhaps best enjoyed as background ambience...particularly in a dark, candlelit room. I don't see myself doing a lot of driving listening with this one, but I could definitely see coming back to it when I want some work music that isn't too distracting.
The Verdict: Haunting and original, Krew Za Krew should be a pleasure for those seeking out the strangest corners of the black metal genre. Normies need not apply, but I don't think Adaestuo would have you anyways. Take the challenge if you dare.
