The Pitch: Sludgy, experimental, alternative non-descript music from Toronto's Godstopper and Connecticut's Grizzlor. FFO Swans, Primus, Mike Patton, Melvins
What I Like: This is a bizarre hodgepodge of some of my favorite things from the 90's that got me into experimental music to begin with. I feel like Godstopper leans heavily on influences like Mike Patton mixed with the heavier riffing of groups like Helmet and Quicksand; but is also willing to go full Mr. Bungle on the minimalistic "Cellophane". As for Grizzlor, it would be a crime to discuss their side without mentioning Primus. These crunchy, off-kilter bass parts and avant-garde vocal deliveries are certainly influenced by Les Claypool and company.
What I Don't Like: First of all, this is quite short. Secondly, I think "Cellophane" would have worked better as part of a full release in the same way that "RV" works best within the full context of Angel Dust.
The Verdict: A fun little peep show that really intrigued me to explore more music from both of these bands. Take this as an introduction and then check out what else they have to offer on Bandcamp. Out this Friday, 2/17.
