The Pitch: After a seven year wait, UK progressive metal/mathcore band The Arusha Accord return with a sassy new EP; the first of four. FFO: Sikth, Between The Buried And Me, Protest The Hero
What I Like: Juracan is a very interesting and multifaceted EP. I was drawn in by the djenty, proggy mathcore of tracks like "Blackened Heart" and "Vultures," but seemingly discontent with sticking to any one convention, others like "Beneath The Dule Tree" branch (no pun intended) out into more uplifting territory that defies accurate description. "The Road" even has some very clear Tool vibes a la "Schism" or "Lateralus" from the groovy bass strikes and matched vocal pace to the overlaid harmonies. But the best comparison I can think to make is Sikth given the progressive song structures and eclectic mixing of heaviness with pure melody. Toss in some very Protest The Hero and BTBAM guitar leads and you've got some really impressive compositions to consider; especially the 7 minute closer. Changes in the band's sound can in part be accounted for in that previous vocalist Alex Green and guitarist Tom Hollings last year, leading them to forge themselves anew as a quartet.
Critiques: I think that overall the faster, heavier tracks stick the landing better than the middle ones, but that's not to say there isn't a deep well of disparate strengths to draw from.
The Verdict: Incredibly catchy and impressively proficient, Juracan is a top notch EP that is definitely worth more than one listen. The Arusha Accord are both adept songwriters and flawless performers through and through.
