The Pitch: We covered this EP from French black and death metallers Impure Ziggurat (members from Necroblood and SvartCrown) a while back, but it is now being delivered on 7'. It seemed appropriate to run it in our new format for anyone who may have missed it the first time.
What I Like: Serenades of Astral Malevolence is chock full of maniacal atmospheric death vocals a la Portal or Adversarial. These growls spew forth unintelligibly from from the very abyss. The guitars lean heavily on black metal roots with shrill tremolo melodies surely found in a book of spells that was never meant to be opened.
What I Don't Like: There is plenty of competetion currently in this genre. They may have to step up their game some in order to compete in the long run. More variation, more surprises.
The Verdict: Impure Ziggurat is a band on the right track; one with plenty of promise, but also plenty of competetion. Be prepared to fight to the death. Album is out today.
