The Pitch: Pennsylvania Cyber-death metal project ZOMBIESHARK! serve up digital brutality with their new album I Will Destroy You, Myself, And Everything I've Ever Loved. FFO: Fear Factory, Khroma, Tyrant Of Death
What I Like: You may or may not have caught my reaction video for the track, "H3LLWORLD_," and let me tell you that ZOMBIESHARK! was wise to choose this as the lead single for this album. It does an incredible job of summarizing the disparate elements at play; an unlikely mashup of haunting Lynchian ambience, brutal deathcore breakdowns, club-worthy synthesizers and breakbeats, and a hint of Fear Factory fashioned industrial metal riffing for good measure. It seems like it shouldn't work, and yet over the course of these 23 minutes I am repeatedly blown away at just how well it does. Cory let me know that he has been nervous about how the departures from his Nintendocore roots would be recieved, but I assured him that his expreimentation and hard work has paid off in spades. Seriously, the pacing and dynamics of this thing are stunning from the stupid heavy death metal vocals and inhuman blasts of grinders like "100likes" and "Red Pyramids Kill Eachother" to the wispy, drifting Blade Runner-esque interludes. I'm even picking on echoes of The Faint on some of the lighter portions with the surprisingly emotional clean singing.
Critiques: I really can't think of anything to say. Knocked it out of the park.
The Verdict: I honestly wasn't sure exactly what to expect from this album going into it, but let me tell you with its brisk, airtight runtime I can scarcely put it down. Honestly, it's quickly made my list of standout albums from 2020 so far; and the fans seem to be just as excited, selling out the first run of cassettes and cleverly action-figure packaged hard drives. Do yourself a favor and pick up a copy for yourself ASAP.
