The Pitch: Paris, France black and death metal band Gohrgone channel more Greco-Roman mythology on sophomore album.

What I Like: The distortion is crispy, crunchy.  Riffs are on the simpler side, but the way in which they are organized and executed with the vocals and other instruments helps maximize impact.  The death growls keep a decent spectrum going from the more brutal and gutteral to throatier snarls.  It's a range that reminds me of Amon Amarth.  I also like the foreboding horn intro to the title track and the killer drums on "Deception's Cloud."

What I Don't Like: I tend to favor a little more from my guitar players.  I am generally okay when it comes to genres like doom and sludge where slow, lumbering chords are a big part of the aesthetic; but when it comes to death metal I feel like it is reasonable to ask for a little more.  As I said, the execution here makes up for it on some level.

The Verdict: If what you're looking for is simply some face-smashing death metal that really brings the pain, Finis Ixion should serve you well.  If you were hoping to climb the musicianship scale a bit further, you may be better served elsewhere.

Flight's Fav's:  "The Ember Grave," "Deception's Cloud"
