The Pitch: Syracuse, New York mathcore/noisegrind band goner. drops their debut EP on the unsuspecting public with early streamcourtesy of Mathcore Index. FFO: Ilenkus, God Mother, Implore
What I Like: goner. made some waves this April with the release of the debut single "My Experience Has Molded Me Into The Failure That Stands Before You." It's a killer track chalk full of guitar acrobatics and verbal violence, and was more than enough to grab my attention for a full review. Fortunately the rest of the EP lives up to the high bar they have set for themselves. Each of these 4 tracks demonstrates the band's overall strengths while also showcasing a slightly different side of their sound. You've got the fast and technical approach of the aforementioned single and "Caretaker 247," a more straightforward hardcore track in "The Great Deciever," and the noisy, mid-paced approach of "Momentary Clarity." In my opinion, each of these songs is a great success, though I'd be lying if I said I wasn't most drawn to the more complex and speedy arrangements. I'm also really digging the vocals. They have a more extreme flavor (aided further by some cool layering) that isn't a far cry from Aborted.
Critiques: This EP is pretty air tight, so I don't have much negative to say. As always moving forward, keep the strong foundation you've built here while finding ways to differentiate yourselves from the pack.
The Verdict: goner. are a band to watch in the coming years. While we've only got 13 minutes of material to work with, it already speaks volumes about what they are capable of. Pick it up on Bandcamp, listen to the single below, and check out the full premiere on Mathcore Index.
