The Pitch:  French melodic, progressive death metal solo project Cold Insight delivers moody, atmospheric music that will appeal to fans of Be'lakor, Insomnium, and Silence Lies Fear

What I Like: It only took a minute or two of listening to start thinking about Be'lakor.  The music of Cold Insight not only utilizes similar riffs and structure, but also comparable vocals.  It's that harsh-yet-subdued growl: heavy, but not particularly aggressive.  However, there are differences as well.  Further Nowhere slows things down a lot more than their Australian peers, taking a few notes from gothic and funeral doom as well as Insomnium's earlier works.  The synths are heavy with somber auras to match the equally morose guitarwork.  Every moment is dripping with emotional weight, pulling the listener into a quagmire of grief and longing.  There are even some 80's vibes to tracks like "Even Dies A Sun."  As long as you're not expecting some ripping Gothenburg tunes, it's all done quite well.

Critiques: I could stand for some trimming on this album as well as a broader range in terms of pacing and dynamic.  Much like my past complaints regarding InsomniumFurther Nowhere spends too much time in a depressive state for my taste.  It's hard to fully appreciate any one emotion without presenting others for contrast.

The Verdict: While the pacing and energy of Further Nowhere could use a jumpstart, it's a solid album from a talented individual with plenty of potential.  The songs are well written and I like the retro influences that pop up here and there.  Ultimately, Cold Insight is a project perhaps best enjoyed by listeners who appreciate both melodic death metal and The Cure.  Get the album right now, together with the instrumental version, for around $5 below.
