The Pitch: Crust punk and blackened thrash from Skumstrike via Caligari Records. FFO: Outre-Tombe, Cell Rot, Rebel Wizard
What I Like: Execution Void is 15 minutes of highly concentrated heavy metal vitriol. It hits fast and hard with riffs rooted deeply in punk and thrash, but also with enough melody to occassionally conjure allusions to the days of Iron Maiden. The vocals are a reverb-soaked, lo-fi nightmare of tinny, blackened shrieks that are equal parts Mayhem and Toxic Narcotic. Alternations of D-beat and blastbeat accelerate this head-on collision of crusty gutter punk and black metal to gory results. No survivors.
Critiques: No awards here for originality, and I'm not sure how well I'll remember this release a few months from now; but as an in-the-moment listening experience there's little not to enjoy.
The Verdict: Some more heavy metal drive-through fast food for you here with Execution Void. Skumstrike waste no time serving up exactly the empty calories you ordered.
