What are the odds that two of the better blackened thrash acts I have heard in the past few years are based out of Texas. As far as things go, the South is at the bottom of my list of places I would expect any sort of black metal group to rise up, but I continue to be proven wrong. Now, while Cambion can't be expected to reach my high expectations set by Absu (in my opinion, probably the best and most noteworthy USBM group in existence), the fact remains that these guys kill it.
Proscriptor aside, you can calso think of Cambion as Immortal meets Kreator. Its that old school take on thrash and black metal, and these distinctions help set it apart from their Texas brethren. These guys likely worshipped Bathory's earlier albums more so than anything from the 2nd wave. It's 80's, it's raw, it's f@#king gnarly.
Unfold Chaos Supreme is fairly uniform its approach, but there is one curveball on "Perfected Agressor." This track has a very strange classical outro, though its inclusion seems solely to provide a counterpoint to the otherwise chaotic buzzing of bees. "Harlots of Hell," and all other tracks for that matter, is unstoppable in it's fuzzy onslaught of tremolo and syncopated vocals.
To be quite honest, thats really the whole album. We are looking at an hour's worth of riffs and solos compressed and put on fast forward to fit into less than 20 minutes. With that in mind, the drums are unsurprisingly mad. Many legs were sacrificed to the making of Unfold Chaos Supreme, but those discarded limbs will not have fallen in vein.
There's really no excuse to not push play and see this one through. In the time it takes to hear the whole thing you've only missed two commercial breaks on TV. But at only $3, you get some killer riffs, shredding solos, and manical black metal vocals. I hope to see these guys develop more in the future and perhaps finally fill the gap left by Absu's lengthy absences.
