The Pitch: New Zealand based slamming death metal act Organectomy re-issue their debut full length Domain of the Wretched via Unique Leader Records..."a crushing mix of slam, tech death, sickening atmospherics, and a ferocious brutality unmatched by most bands today." FFO: Within Destruction, Abnormality, Vulvodynia
What I Like: I tend to shy away from the typical slam album since everything that needs to be said about them already has been. All of the usual descriptors apply here: brutal, technical, crushing, etc. Domain of the Wretched is your everyman slamming death metal release. Even so Organectomy managed to grab my attention with their consistency and intensity. This is a solid album from front to back with enduring energy, memorable performances, and wrecking ball production. The vocals are satisfactorily varied with gurgles, growls, and brees; and even when the compositions aren’t particularly original, they aren’t bland either. I’ll go out on a limb and say that this could very well end up being one of the best slam records of 2018.
Critiques: I really hope that more bands in this genre start exploring new directions to take their sound. There’s already a veritable ocean of albums that sound exactly like this. A really solid one like Organectomy could easily steal the spotlight with fresh ideas.
The Verdict: Domain of the Wretched may be another relatively by the numbers slam release, but it passes all of the criteria with flying colors. If slam were a college degree, Organectomy would graduate Summa Cum Laude. More than worth a listen.
