The Pitch: Multidimensional, jazz-influenced progressive death metal from Canadian band Trilateral.  FFO CB Murdoc, Cynic, Gojira

What I Like: Trilateral share similarities with a number of bands, including those listed above and others like Car Bomb; and yet they have a sound that is ultimately unique.  The band takes electronic music, piano, acoustic, jazz, death metal, progressive rock, mathcore, and anything else they can get their hands on; then proceeds to throw it all in a blender and hit "puree."  The resulting concoction is very enticing with a multitude of texture and flavor.  Listen to those drums!  Dat bass!  The intrigue pulled me in and remained consistent throughout the album.  I was particularly fond of how all of these dimensions were rolled into intensely heavy compositions on the last two proper tracks.

What I Don't Like: While the instrumentation is incredibly varied and proficient, compositions often miss the mark in terms of visceral connection to the listener.  In this way it falls short of albums like Here Be Dragons.

The Verdict: An accomplished album from musicians who are not only talented, but also have a unique vision.  I only hope that as the band matures they can better unite this vision with a better sense of what makes a listener keep coming back for more.  Watch for the album on March 11th.  We'll be sure to post more music as it becomes available for your earholes.
