The Pitch: Canadian progressive metalcore/deathcore group Galactic Pegasus mix brutally harsh vocals with intense melody to bring us one of the best core releases of 2016.

What I Like: Though the band leans heavily on djenty deathcore chug and groove, the progressive leads keep tracks interesting.  The vocals can be super heavy, often reminding me more of Carach Angren than any metalcore group.  Furthermore, the counterbalancing of these shrieks with some of the catchier hooks is exemplary.  The occasional clean singing and electronics are tasteful and well-implemented.

What I Don't Like:  There are a few songs that felt pretty generic, and I think it was a poor choice to open with two of them: "Jenova" and "Bottoms Up."  These are not terrible, but compared to the many infinitely more impressive compositions a less invested listener might be turned off before they get a chance to really get to the meat of this album.

The Verdict: Phantom of the Hill is one of the better albums I have heard this year in the metalcore genre.  Stick to your guns and keep making creative music, ditch the simpler filler.
