The Pitch: Creator-Destructor Records presses California raw metallic punk/hardcore outfit Gulch's latest EP to 7". FFO: Herida Profunda, Crypt Rot, Graben

What I Like: As I listen to Burning Desire to Draw Last Breath, I can't help but find myself thinking back to what I thought The Misfits must sound like. Stay with me here. For whatever reason, I went a long time without listening to this classic band, and when people would wear the skull shirts and describe them as "horror punk," my metalheaded brain assumed it would actually be...scary. Suffice it to say, Gulch is a bit more my speed. Combining D-beats and basic punk chord structures with venomous blackened death vocals, this band is quite the horror show indeed. The 14 or so minute EP is the perfect soundtrack to a cannibalistic kegger in some dark, dank cave.

Critiques: It's a bit short, and in its brevity still occasionally ends up being a little repetitious. Punk's not meant to be technical, but a little more variety would be nice.

The Verdict: Gulch's Burning Desire to Draw Last Breath is a headbanging good time that is as ugly as it is fun. Pardon an insensitive joke (emphasis on that last word), but this album is the partner that is dynamite in the sack...provided they turn down the lights and don the brown bag.
