The Pitch: "Insectile Death Metal" and sci-fi inspired band Boreworm unleash cosmic horror on their sophomore EP, Entomophobia. Out 11/19.
What I Like: Another interesting take on fusing the more brutal elements of death metal with the melodic without resorting to the Gothenburg or metalcore aesthetic. There are some post-metal and jazz detours that are quite lovely. All-around dazzling guitar work and I like the industrial sound of the drums. I also really dig the front cover. Anyone else think this looks like gritty fan art of Kaonashi/No Face from Spirited Away?
What I Don't Like: The vocals could use some work. In certain spots they are intense and on point, others they feel a little clunky (namely on the title track). Just tighten it up and maybe consider some variation.
The Verdict: Boreworm is still a little rough around the edges, but thanks to strong, varied guitar performances and some interesting twists and turns, this four song EP ends up hitting quite strong.
