The Pitch: "Abysmal, primal, stripped-down death metal" from Filtheater brought to you by Memento Mori. FFO: Altarage, Adversarial, Portal

What I Like: Food for thought; metal is largely the only realm in which a musician would actively choose to make their instrument sound like a garbled mess. In no other genre would an artist hear the wet cardboard drums of early Gorgoroth and respond with, "That's it. That's what I want." But it seems that Filtheater wouldn't have it any other way. Their blastbeats, sure enough, sound as if they were recorded on a Talkboy that's running out of batteries. With an overall aesthetic that can more or less be described as Altarage minus the sense of order or studio production; it goes without saying that this is an intensely ugly album. Adversarial also comes to mind, but even there Filtheater come out on top in terms of sheer raw, abrasiveness. It's impressively technical while refusing to be flashy. Quite the opposite, it revels in its revulsion.

Critiques: Another album that runs just a tad too long. I think that this material would be better served at around 30-35 minutes. Also, if I'm being honest, I would choose Altarage over this any day. The songwriting isn't quite as dynamic or interesting.

The Verdict: Blight of Sempiternal Putrefaction, simply put, is the stuff of nightmares. It's a dark, dank pit of blackened death metal filth, and my inner slovenly pig can't wait to roll around in it.
