Mirre is the debut full length album of Innerwoud, a one man drone project from Belgium. What makes the drone here stand out from other groups is the focus on double bass guitar. His practice is reportedly rooted in contemporary classical music, but the end result is much more of a haunting soundscape than a traditional composition. An approach the artist describes as “mostly deep drone harmonies, accompanied by a subtle and dark melody...in the warm shade of Icelandic and Canadian predecessors.”

I am a sucker for strings, and that is what you are going to get here. Such a layering of lush, palpable mood conveyed through gorgeous bow work. I put these four songs on repeat and probably went through it a good 5 times without getting bored of it. A very strong comparison could be made with the work of Clint Mansell and the Kronos Quartet on the Requiem for a Dream soundtrack. This recording has a similar focus on balancing dark melancholia and mournful tones with the occasional memorable melody.

I’m going to keep this one brief and let the music speak for itself. If you have some work to do today be it typing, reading, writing, etc; I encourage you to find a comfortable place, put on some soft lighting, and crank this on loop through some headphones. I felt dapper as hell, yet depressed at the same time. If you like drone, classical, or any quartet-like string music; Mirre is the one for you.
