The Pitch: The debut EP from Canadian blackened death metal project Unburnt, feat. members of  Samskaras, Odium, and We Are Human. FFO: Hideous Divinity, Enfold Darkness, Veld

What I Like: What happens when a pack of tech deathers join forces and get blackened? Utter heresy. Arcane Evolution is the sound of pure evil perfectly punctuated by ripping guitar solos and plenty of technical flourishes. Like the disfigured, hooded acolyte on the cover, Unburnt show a dedication to darkness that is equal parts Behemoth and Enfold Darkness. The songwriting traverses effortlessly between various black and death metal modes from old school to new. I'm particularly impressed with the last two songs. That final melodic push over the cliff on the title track has some wicked Cattle Decapitation vibes.

Critiques: The vocals could use a little work. There's a little too much Phill Anselmo leaking in where I'd prefer something a more pure death metal. Don't get me wrong, nothing about this sounds like Pantera, but I hear some "yowl."

The Verdict: Arcane Evolution is a promising start for this little supergroup. I love the combination of the blackened and tech worlds, and with a little more development I look forward to a full length in the future.
